Deacons are usually chosen from men who are the "the husband of but one wife and (who) manage his children and his household well" 1Timothy 3:12. They serve without pay.
Our deacons are ordained and selected by the congregation to assist in the leadership of the church. All families in our church are assigned a deacon who's primary function is to minister to them through prayer, phone calls and personal visits.
